Short Bio

Debbie Zapata, LCSW, is the author of Abuela’s Letter, published by Magination Press, (Books for Kids American Psychological Association), illustrated by Alejandra Ruiz, and Up and Adam, (Kids Can Press ),illustrated by Yong Ling Kang. Her forthcoming titles include Isabel’s Birthday Surprise (Magination Press, 2025) and A Taxi for Everyone: How Roy Velasquez Fought for Equality (Little Bee Books, 2026). A licensed counselor and picture book author, Debbie writes stories filled with heart and humor, often highlighting everyday people who make a difference.

Long Bio

Debbie Zapata, LCSW, is the author of Abuela’s Letter, published by Magination Press, (Books for Kids American Psychological Association), illustrated by Alejandra Ruiz. Her debut picture book, Up and Adam, (Kids Can Press), illustrated by Yong Ling Kang. Her forthcoming titles include Isabel’s Birthday Surprise (Magination Press, 2025) and A Taxi for Everyone: How Roy Velasquez Fought for Equality (Little Bee Books, 2026).

Debbie grew up in Austin, Texas, where she found joy in community spaces—local parks, recreation centers, and libraries filled with stories and connection. As a child, she loved writing to her international pen pals, discovering early the power of words to connect people. Today, she writes children’s books with heart and humor, often highlighting everyday people who make a difference.

With a background in international programming and a Master’s in Social Work from NYU, Debbie brings cultural insight and emotional depth to her work. In addition to writing, she works as a counselor and advocate for children with disabilities. Debbie is an active member of SCBWI and the 12 x 12 Picture Book Challenge.
