Long Bio
Debbie Zapata, LCSW, is the author of Abuela’s Letter, published by Magination Press, (Books for Kids American Psychological Association) and illustrated by Alejandra Ruiz. Her debut picture book, Up and Adam, is published by Kids Can Press and illustrated by Yong Ling Kang. Growing up in Austin, Texas, Debbie cherished places that brought people together—local parks, rec centers, and libraries full of life. She loved writing letters to her international pen pals, discovering the power of words to connect people across distances. Today, she writes children’s books filled with heart and humor, with a special love for stories about everyday people who make a difference.
Through her work, Debbie hopes to inspire kindness, create moments of joy, and help all young readers feel seen and valued. In addition to writing, she has a background as an international programs specialist, giving her a rich understanding of cultures and perspectives. In 2005, she earned her Master’s in Social Work from NYU, a foundation that shaped her compassionate approach to storytelling. Debbie enjoys helping others as a counselor and spending time with her family. She is an active member of SCBWI and is represented by James McGowan of BookEnds Literary Agency.
