Hi, I’m Debbie!

I grew up in a multi-cultural family in Austin, Texas. As a girl, I loved the places that brought people together—public parks, community rec centers and the local libraries. I loved writing letters to my international pen pals. Today I write books for children. I like writing books that have heart and humor. My favorite stories are about ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Many of my stories celebrate diversity and pay tribute to my Mexican culture. Some have won awards. I received the Austin SCBWI Scholarship for Creators of Diverse Worlds in 2018 and 2020. I was one of the top finalists for the 2018 We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) Mentorship Contest.

Besides being an author, I hold a B.A. in French and an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies. I spent a decade working in international programs, where I helped people from all over the world. In 2005, I received my Master in Social Work from NYU. After living in NYC for ten years, I moved back to Austin. I enjoy helping others as a counselor and spending time with my family.

I am represented by James McGowan of BookEnds Literary Agency.
